Energy and transport are the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, accounting for 25% and 21% of total emissions, respectively. Addressing these emissions is crucial to achieving the EU’s climate goals, particularly the target of net zero by 2050. One major opportunity lies in improving the management, conversion, and distribution of thermal energy, as well as harnessing wasted heat to generate electricity.

Current energy systems suffer from inefficiencies that result in significant energy losses, particularly in heating, cooling, and transport. By enhancing energy efficiency and converting waste heat into electricity, sectors such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and building infrastructure can operate more sustainably. There is a growing need for innovative solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into existing and future energy networks to reduce emissions and improve overall efficiency.

THERMINATOR, funded by Horizon Europe, aims to develop a groundbreaking energy conversion technology in the form of an efficient, low-profile energy conversion “skin”. This innovation will integrate thermoacoustic and electrocaloric systems to actively reduce energy loss and provide temperature conversion in heat networks. The technology can be applied to building insulation, heat distribution systems, solar panels, and electric vehicles to enhance efficiency and sustainability. By supporting the EU’s Green Deal and climate neutrality goals, THERMINATOR will play a crucial role in advancing energy solutions for a cleaner future.
